I opened my laptop today feeling completely exhausted, but I’m writing this anyway because twelve months from now, I need to know I didn’t give up.
Dear me,
If you are reading this twelve months from now, I hope you are proud of the person who wrote this.
Right now, I am in a stage of my life where I am trying to figure things out. I have goals, plans, fears, and a lot of things I still don’t know how to do. I don’t expect to have everything figured out a year from now, but I do expect one thing: growth.
When I say I want to be successful, I don’t mean I expect to become crazy rich or have everything perfectly figured out. I just want to be at a higher level than I am today. I want to look back and genuinely see that I moved forward.
One of the biggest things I want to achieve is getting my first few freelancing jobs. I want to make money with my tech skills and prove to myself that the things I am spending so much time learning can actually create opportunities for me. I also want to build successful digital products that can earn me money. These are my goals right now, and I hope that by the time you read this, they are no longer just goals written down somewhere. I hope some of them have become things you actually accomplished.
Right now, though, things aren’t always easy.
I am currently learning React, working on projects, trying to improve my coding skills, and learning digital marketing at the same time. Sometimes it feels like I am trying to learn too many things at once. There are moments when I feel overwhelmed and wonder whether I am actually making enough progress.
But I keep going.
I want to become genuinely good at coding. I want to master JavaScript and React instead of simply knowing enough to complete a project. I want to be able to look at a problem and have the confidence to figure out how to solve it. I know that becoming good at something takes time, and I know there will be plenty of moments where I will feel like I am not improving fast enough.
I hope future me remembers that.
I also know that one of my biggest weaknesses right now is time management. I have a lot of things I want to do, but having goals doesn’t automatically mean I will accomplish them. I need to learn how to manage my time, stay organized, and actually be consistent.
And honestly, consistency is one of the things I am most afraid of losing.
I am scared that I might drift away from my current goals. I am scared that I might stop learning. I am scared that I might lose my way and eventually look back a year from now and realize I didn’t get anywhere. I am scared that future me won’t be where I want her to be. I am even scared that I won’t have enough money.
I am scared of a lot of things.
But I don’t want my fears to decide what my future looks like.
Instead, I want to work towards making sure those fears don’t become my reality. I want to keep learning even when I don’t feel motivated. I want to keep building even when a project doesn’t work. I want to keep trying even when I don’t immediately see results.
I also have things I refuse to sacrifice along the way.
I refuse to sacrifice my peace of mind just to achieve success. I refuse to sacrifice my education. I have come a long way, and I might as well finish school. I want to grow professionally without forgetting that I am still a student with a life outside of work and technology.
If everything goes well, I don’t know exactly what future me will be able to say. Maybe I’ll have my first freelance clients. Maybe I’ll have built products that actually make money. Maybe I’ll be much better at coding than I am today. Maybe I’ll have discovered completely new goals.
But I do know one thing.
Future me will be grateful for the effort I am putting in right now.
Even if every plan doesn’t work out exactly the way I imagine, I hope you remember how hard you tried. I hope you remember the days you were tired but still opened your laptop. I hope you remember the times you struggled with something and decided to learn it anyway. I hope you remember that you didn’t have everything figured out, but you kept moving.
Most importantly, I want you to remember that I was strong.
Because honestly, I am genuinely tired of everything sometimes. There are days when I feel overwhelmed, uncertain, and afraid of what the future holds. But despite all of that, I’m not giving up.
So, dear me, twelve months from now, I hope you are proud of me.
I hope you look back at this version of yourself with gratitude, not embarrassment. I hope you see someone who was still learning, still struggling, still afraid, but still trying.
And if you aren’t exactly where you wanted to be, that’s okay too.
Just don’t forget how far you’ve come.
Keep going.
I hope you’re proud of us.
Yours truly,
Chidera Ezeoffia
